I made a list of carry-on gadgets (meaning: these items may be found in your bag all at the same time or at least most of them) that I personally believe one should NOT be caught dead without:
ü Smart Phone
ü Extra phone with Bluetooth (for another network)
ü iPod / MP3 Player
ü USB Flash Drive / External Hard Drive
ü PSP / Nintendo DS Lite (handheld game console)
ü Digital Camera
ü Laptop

Nokia N95
3G Smart Phones. Needless to say, there is a plethora of 3G smart Phones in the market today. Whichever one you prefer, it doesn’t matter so long as it is indeed a smart phone (be it touch screen or not). Currently, the 3G smart phone I’m using is Nokia N95 (I still have my N93 and I’ll open my N97 – still in a box, next year). What differentiates an ordinary mobile phone from a smart phone? Well, for starters, smart phones are mobile multimedia computers. Hence, a smart phone is feature-packed. Generally, it supports 3G, HSDPA, GSM, GPRS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, infrared (in some handsets), and GPS (so you’ll always know where you are and therefore you won’t ever get lost – it’s a paid service though). Your smart phone should also have (at least) 3.2 MP camera and higher, a functional secondary camera (which you could use to take pictures of yourself and not just for video calling purposes), 160MB (at least) internal memory, and an expandable via MicroSD card. One more thing, most if not all smart phones have a CD installer. Thus, you could synchronize your smart phone with your PC and/or laptop, back up all its contents and never worry if your phone got lost or stolen (which, God forbid, would never ever happen!)
Nokia N93
Extra phone with Bluetooth. In my case, it’s best to have two mobile phones, one for Smart and the other for Globe. You could even have a third with Sun. Your secondary phone should at least have a Bluetooth so you could transfer files from your smart phone and your secondary phone for back up. It is upon your discretion to have another smart phone as your secondary phone. Transferring of files to a compatible phone is easier and you don’t have to worry about missing phonebook contact details. A compatible extra phone also allows you to get in touch with people in your phonebook if your primary phone’s battery went dead.
iPod 30G
iPod. I’m a sucker for iPod. I’d always choose an iPod more than any other media player in the market. Although most mp3 players have drag-and-drop function for ease of transferring mp3 files, I still like the way that an iPod makes you log on to iTunes (of course with internet connection) before you could transfer your mp3 files to your iPod. It’s tacky, yeah. But hey, what the heck! It’s still an iPod. In my opinion, it sets the standard for MP3 players. My iPod video has 30G memory and already has more than 5k songs in it (music galore for my ears). I got a dock for my iPod, but of course it’s not as handy. So whenever I need a loudspeaker, I use my handy battery operated speakers which one could also bring anywhere. If you feel bored, just pop in your ears the earphones and off you go to a whole new world of music with an iPod! Indeed a must have item in your carry on bag.
USB Flash Drives
USB Flash Drive / External Hard Drive. I have two flash disks from Korea. Amazingly they’re still working perfectly after more than two years compared to a flash given to me by my sister which she got free when she bought an HP notebook in Qatar. That free USB contained important work files which are now all gone because the flash just stopped functioning, to think it has been with me for only like four months. Anyways, USB flash disks are handy especially if you don’t want to bring your notebook PC every time. Depending on its memory size, you could put virtually anything in it. You could even use the same flash disk to play your music files when inserted in an iPod dock. Hence, this tiny thingamajig is something that is an essential in today’s personal, school or work life. Incidentally, flash disks are extremely fashionable now. If you don’t want the generic colored ordinary looking stick, you could buy them now in a myriad of colors and shapes. They even come in designer brands! Price depends on the brand and the storage capacity. USB flash drives are relatively inexpensive and a convenient way to back-up your data. Now if you have extra dough, get a shock proof external hard drive that could store tons of data and has extra special features that would keep your files safe and secure.
PSP/Nintendo DS Lite. I have a PSP slim and my nephew has a Nintendo DS Lite. Personally, I prefer PSP and in my opinion, it is the best game console in the market. I am neither an expert gamer nor an authority in gaming consoles. So please don’t crucify me. I have great respect for Nintendo since I practically grew up with Nintendo family computer! Anyway, gaming is no longer limited to playing at home, internet café, or arcade. Now, one can play anywhere: in a park, in a train, in a bus, in a car, in a cab, in a plane (well, you have to turn off electronic gadgets when asked), during office or school lunch breaks, in bed, virtually anywhere. If you don’t want to play alone, you could still play with your friends via its network gaming feature. A handheld gaming console is another must in your carry on bag.
Kodak 8.2MP Digital Camera
Digital Camera. Certain moments in your life or the world around you ought to be captured in stills. The best way to do it is to snap pictures of ‘em. A digital camera then comes handy. Mine is a Kodak 8.2MP camera and I love it so much. It’s very easy to use and shots are very clear and crisp. Since I love taking pictures, my digicam does wonders to document events in my life. Best of all, editing is a breeze and Kodak has a ‘magic touch’ feature which makes your shots even clearer and crisper. Depending on it’s memory size, you could take up to more than 2000 pictures in just a day!
Laptop. In this world of technological wonders and thingamajigs, a laptop is a very important gadget that is indeed a must have. One could now afford laptops with very good features. Laptops make life easier either for work or pleasure. Since it is very handy, you could take it anywhere. There are heaps of options to choose from in buying a laptop. They come in different sizes and colors. Add to that a built in webcam. Most laptops have wifi, hence, you could chat and browse the internet free of charge virtually anywhere too. If you want to have your own internet access, cellular companies offer wireless broadband internet which you could avail of either prepaid or postpaid. Chat away anytime, anywhere 24/7.
Needless to say, I have all of em! Haha~! Well, I need em. My life would be boring without em. However, even if you don’t have all of em, you still have a life anyway. Just enjoy what you have and when you could afford to add a new gadget, then go get it! Have fun with it and have fun with your life as well.
P.S. You do need to have a good bag to be able to carry all of those stuff. ^^
